It's 6:30 in the morning and usually me and my family starts the day with coffee and some news on TV.
We turned in to Umagang Kay Ganda and we came across this huge controversy that's been bugging religious people, well Catholics and artists.
I don't know if this is made to ridicule Catholics in particular. As part of the congregation myself, I am overwhelmed and startled by how this turned out. What's the reason behind this expression? What does the artist mean by this? What is his purpose?
Up to now, I am still trying to discern my verdict. One priest from Manila said that if this was your loved one, being the model in the art, would you have liked what the artist created? Would you appreciate the whole concept? By the way, what is the whole concept? That God has a penis? Or the cross is some sort of a canvass for anyone to put creative mixes on? I was beginning to think that Filipinos are way out of their heads. I was starting to feel as if the whole idea of a spiritual being or a sacred symbol has been taken for granted.
But here's the thing, I think as people we always want to exaggerate things. We'd always desire to stretch more than our own comforts just to see how far we could go. Our imagination could go to a hundred miles from wherever we stand only to assess the limits of our true potential. I am not taking sides but I see this as a signal in a way that as Catholics we are still shaken. Meaning that we still have faith, we honor and we preserve our God.
Perhaps the bottom line of this whole creation was to make people look back at art and make people think. Provoke people. Buzz the religious groups. But however or whatever the reason maybe for this sort of act is truly an insult to the people who believes in the sacred symbol of the cross. In everything we do, there is no such thing as Absolute Freedom, as what the reporter said. If you respect people, then you should also show respect to what they believe.
