Around 4 years ago, when me and Mel were still starting to date I was I think rather meek. I was really young and he was already experienced. So, my exposure to anything, be it travel, food or being street smart was really point zero. I was naive back then. But, I was always I think thirsty for new things, new experiences and definitely great food for my palate.
So, my first ever journey to experimenting with food was none other than our very own BALUT. Yes, I love Balut. I fell in love with it the moment I scooped its tasty liquid, gooey, dreamy, unique, nothing can compete kind of soup. I will share to you some facts about this better eat than look cuisine. :-)
According to Wikipedia and people around:
A balut is a fertilized duck embryo that is boiled alive and eaten in the shell.
(So, it''s not chicken eggs guys.)
Popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac and considered a high-protein, hearty snack, balut are mostly sold by street vendors in the regions where they are available.
Balut eaters prefer salt and/or a chili, garlic and vinegar (white or coconut sap) mixture to season their eggs.
(I prefer vinegar with chili and garlic.)
The eggs are savored for their balance of textures and flavors; the broth surrounding the embryo is sipped from the egg before the shell is peeled, and the yolk and young chick inside can be eaten.
All of the contents of the egg may be consumed, although the white may remain uneaten; depending on the age of the fertilized egg, the white may have an unappetizing cartilaginous toughness.
Surely, it's not the best looking food there is but it's so delicious and nutritious. All other food are put to shame. This was the food that unlocked my inner Andrew Zimmer and curiosity like that of Anthony Bourdain.
BON APETITE!!!
Watch out for my next food feature. :-)
