Ostrich Farm in Opol

One of the fun things about Sundays is you get to spend it with family. This time, we decided to visit the Ostrich Farm in Malanang, Opol, Misamis Oriental. This farm is owned by the Limketkai's. It has 600 Ostriches and right now, they are the sole producer of Ostrich meat in Cagayan de Oro City and they even supply nationwide.

Well, we had an interesting adventure because we got lost going there. Apparently, we went through the other side of the mountain completely far from the road to the farm. However, as we went back and asked nearby residents, we got along just fine. Just a tip, when you get to the market of Opol, go through the "galingan" or rice milling area and go straight. Travel is about 5 kilometers with rocky and bumpy road. It has not really been developed for tourism purposes but people go here anyway.

Reaching the place has never been such a relief for all of us. After the heat and exhaustion, I am still glad everyone was a sport. so went in and they are open daily Mondays to Sundays. Fees are for adult, P30, student P20 and kids P15. Aside from the Ostrich, they have crocodiles, peacocks and sheeps.

If you wish to buy Ostrich meat, they can at P1,100 to P600 per kilo.

The tour was really most interesting with the kids. They were amazed with the huge Ostrich egg and Dwayne was really amazed with the crocodile. It was his first time. After the brief encounter with the big birds and crocs, we went straight to the nearest beach spot in Opol. Time to relax and unwind and of course swim!

These kids wanted it so bad.

Field Trip!

Today has never been more fun for Dwayne. Today was his first ever field trip, at Manresa Farm.

Well, it was organized by the school to expose kids to God's creation such as the wonderful trees, flowers and animals. The night before, Dwayne was already super excited. Fieeellldddd Trriiipppp, he said.

Anyway, the first stop was the Butterfly Garden. We also went to the Arthropod Room where all the insects and Arthropod family was displayed. It was like a mini zoo for insects. But this one, Dwayne did not love so much. He was actually afraid of the butterflies and all creeping insects.

Second area was the chicken/poultry/duck/rabbit growing. He loved it. Too many of them!!! Here are some pictures.

Next was our trip the wild life sanctuary. You can call it a zoo but it still has to collect more animals. I guess, they are just collecting all animals they find in their area. Dwayne's favorite in this area was the Python Snake! The shock and the amazement, you can't beat it. It's like all animals he admired on Nat Geo Wild is here, face to face.

And that face! Priceless!

That saying "Early bird catches the worm," I have proven it wrong several times now. It's not true. The fun really began at the end of the trip. Well, there was the famous Janno, horse in Manresa that is 24 years old who everybody loves because he is just a gentle animal. Well, Dwayne did not take a seat at the back of Janno. For some reason, he is afraid of horses (other than butterflies).

But at the end where everybody was already tired and bought juices from the Food Tech laboratory in the farm, Dwayne kept on asking, where is the turtle ma? Where are the cows? the pigs? I said, that was the end of the trip Dwyane. But of course, he said no ma... I need to see the turtle.

Then came a fellow mom saying that we can ride a jeepney going further down the farm where the pigs, sheeps, goats, and cows are. Whaaattt??? Fantastic! We huried to the jeep. It was the best opportunity ever. Was not part of the itinerary (at least the free ride) but it was just so cool. (Best things in life are free, right?)

Moving on, yes if I was happy, Dwayne was happier! He loes riding jeeps and usually begs me to ride one when we go to the city. What we found are more domestic animals. It was the best, really. Dwayne got to see them up close and personal. And have you seen the biggest pigs in your life? There are crazy huge pigs at Manresa Farm.

Here are more photos if you'd like to see.

The bonus? We found a COBRA in the farm. The driver of the jeep said they just caught it today so it was fresh meat. Dwayne loves snakes. He especially loves King Cobra, it's his favorite. So when he saw it in the flesh, he was astonished!

It was the best experience for Dwayne. He loved it. He said, it was an amazing field trip ma.

Finally, we went back to the wild life sanctuary to find the turtle he's been looking for. Dwayne, this was the best time for me and for you. I am happy that you were so happy during this field trip.

Til the next Field Trip!
